The Building of Our Team

To kick start our season together we spent a day getting to know each other. The weather was not quite what the girls hoped, but nonetheless, we had an incredible day bonding together and really getting to know each other. Team building involved hiking in the rain, playing spoons, writing letters of encouragement, having a weiner roast, and so much more. The girls would agree it was a pretty spectacular day ! Here are a few pictures to show for it 🙂img_2331-copy img_2333-copy img_2347-copy

Third is the Word

The Grade 6/7 volleyball team ended their season today, and they did so on a positive note! They captured third place in the CESS tournament, playing at Regent Christian Academy.

There are aspects of their performance today that has me nearly bursting at the seams, in pride. We faced some adversity today. We were playing a version of volleyball called three-ball. We had played by regular volleyball rules all season so the girls (and coaches) were trying to adjust. On top of that, we lost in the semi-final. It was right after lunch, and I am not sure if it was because we ate too much, or we were feeling too confident after Myah won 2nd place in the serving competition, but we did not play great in the first game. But the girls did fight back and won the 2nd game setting up a deciding third game, up to 15. We played well but lost 15-13.

The impressive part is how the team responded after such a hard loss. I think we were feeling a little sorry for ourselves and lost our first game in the 3rd place match. But then the girls decided to play. I asked them to leave a good taste in their mouths, and they made something delicious. J We won the 2nd game and followed that with a 15-11 win in the third game.

Today (Friday), they will be carrying the trophy they won with them, in class. In the morning, it will be with our five Grade 6 players (Myah, Abbie, Della, Nicole, Shaelyn). After recess, the Grade 7 girls will have it (Annika, Lydia, Halle, Jenna and Kaetlyn).

These young ladies bode well for the future of Highroad volleyball.

On behalf of our EXCELLENT assistant coach, Brittney,

Coach Krahn

Volleyball Champs!

Highroad Academy is home to the best Grade 7 girls’ volleyball team in all of Chilliwack! And that is not just the opinion of their coaches. This past Wednesday (November 4th) the Knights defeated all comers and emerged as the champion for 2015 in the city of Chilliwack.

The team started slow, losing their first game to Vedder Middle School, but that was the final game they lost all day. They defeated GW Graham and Unity to finish first in their pool. In the semi-finals they beat Chilliwack Middle School, and in the finals they defeated Vedder Middle.

Besides winning, the best part was that all 10 girls were able (or chose to) play all five matches. And for the playoff portion of the tournament, our assistant coach, Brittney was able to come out. The girls really focused as the day went on. Serves were being put into play, the girls were moving to the ball, and they were communicating well with each other. It was the best they have played this entire season!

Congratulations to …

Abbie, Annika, Della, Halle, Jenna, Kaetlyn, Lydia, Myah, Nicole, and Shaelyn!

Great work girls!

Grade 6/7 Volleyball Update

IMG_5460

The Grade 6/7 Girls Volleyball team continued their strong play, and demonstrated their improving skills, as they took on teams from Chilliwack Middle and Rosedale Traditional schools. The girls won both games against Chilliwack Middle (25-11 and 25-20), and split with Rosedale Traditional (17-25 and 25-14).

Almost all players were able to attend the games. For the first time, Della and Nicole were able to join the team for something other than practice. They fit in quite nicely, contributing many positive plays throughout the afternoon. Abbie and Myah continued to help out this team, and show that the team next year will be strong. Along with Shaelyn, the Grade 6 girls have demonstrated that they belong playing at this level. With this year’s experience they should drive further success for Highroad volleyball.

The Grade 7 players also made significant contributions in their games. Halle and Annika had breakthroughs with their serving, becoming much more consistent. Lydia continues to demonstrate how to serve effectively with your non-dominant hand. And although their coach does not always identify them correctly, Jenna and Kaetlyn are valued members of the team. Their excellent serving and hustle is appreciated. The Junior team should do well next year with these Grade 7 girls moving on.
